Opening weekend is worth it if the spectacle and energy of being there on day one is what you’re after, or if your schedule doesn’t allow flexibility. But for most visitors — especially first-timers, families with kids, or anyone who wants to actually move around the fairgrounds comfortably — it’s not the best introduction to the fair.

Weekdays in the Second or Third Week: The Sweet Spot

The best time to visit the State Fair of Texas for most people is a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday in the second or third week of the fair’s run. Here’s why:

Crowds are manageable. Weekday attendance is a fraction of weekend crowds. Lines for food, rides, and the auto show are shorter. You can actually move around the fairgrounds without feeling like you’re navigating a concert exit.

Weather is often ideal. By the second week of October, North Texas temperatures start to drop from the brutal late-September heat into genuinely pleasant fall weather. The sweet spot is a clear day in the mid-70s — warm enough to be comfortable outside, cool enough to not be miserable.

Hotel rates are lower. Midweek stays during the fair run are significantly cheaper than weekends — often 30–50% less for the same property. Discount days often fall on weekdays. The fair offers reduced admission on select weekdays — sometimes dramatically so. These discount days are announced before opening and are worth building your visit around if your schedule allows.

Weekends: How to Make the Most of It

Most people can only visit the fair on weekends — and that’s fine. The fair is still great on weekends, just busier. A few things that help:

Arrive at opening. The first hour or two of a weekend day is dramatically less crowded than noon onward. Getting there at 10am and hitting the most popular spots — Big Tex, the auto show, the top food vendors — before the midday rush makes a real difference.

Avoid opening weekend and Cotton Bowl weekend. If you have any flexibility on which weekend you go, the third weekend of the fair’s run typically offers the best combination of full fair programming and manageable crowds.

What the Weather Is Like During the Fair

Late September (opening weeks): Still summer in Texas. Expect temperatures in the high 80s to mid-90s with humidity. Morning hours are more bearable than afternoon. Sunscreen, breathable clothing, and hydration are essential. The auto show and exhibit buildings offer air-conditioned relief.

Early October: Temperatures start to moderate — highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s on most days, with occasional hot stretches. Still warm but more manageable than opening week. This is when the fair starts feeling like fall.

Mid-to-late October (closing weeks): North Texas fall weather arrives — temperatures in the 60s and 70s on most days, with the occasional cold front dropping things into the 50s. The most comfortable time to be at the fair. Bring a light layer for evenings and a rain jacket for the unpredictable October fronts.

Best Time Based on What You Want to Do

For the auto show reveals: Go in the first week. Major manufacturers announce new models on opening days and the reveal energy is highest at the start of the fair.

For new fried food items: Any time works — the Big Tex Choice Award winners are available throughout the run. Lines are shortest on weekday afternoons after the lunch rush.
