State Fair of Texas with Kids — 2026 Family Guide

The 2026 fair runs Sept 25–Oct 18 at Fair Park. Kids 3–12 are $10 every day, and two areas are built just for young fairgoers this year.

Best Day

Tuesday

Weekday crowds, $15 adult admission, and kiddie rides drop to 3 coupons.

New for 2026

Little Lone Stars Land

A toddler and young-kid zone near the Gurley Gate with 4-coupon rides, a petting zoo, and a fenced play area.

Rides

No Wristbands

Every ride is paid with $1 coupons. Most Kidway rides are 5 coupons, 3 on Tuesdays.

Getting There

DART Green Line

Fair Park Station is at the main gate. Easier than parking with little ones — official lots are $25.

The State Fair of Texas is genuinely great for kids — Big Tex, the Midway rides, the livestock barns, corny dogs, and the sheer spectacle make for a memorable day. But 277 acres, Texas heat, lines, and tired legs take some planning if you want to enjoy it rather than survive it.

When to Go with Kids

Go on a weekday — ideally a Tuesday. Weekday crowds are far lighter than weekends, adult admission is $15 instead of $25, and on Tuesdays kiddie rides drop to 3 coupons. Kids 3–12 are $10 every day of the week. For the rest of 2026, the remaining Tuesdays are October 6 and 13.

Arrive at opening. The fair opens at 10 a.m. The first hour or two is the best time for rides, Big Tex photos, and the auto show — and kids have the most energy in the morning.

Skip Saturday, October 10. The Texas–OU game at the Cotton Bowl brings 100,000+ extra people to Fair Park — the most crowded day of the run.

Plan to leave before meltdown o’clock. For young kids, a full fair day usually hits the wall somewhere in mid-afternoon. Build in a natural end point rather than pushing until someone cries. The fair runs 24 days — you can always come back.

Sensory-Friendly Mornings: On Wednesday mornings the fair hosts Sensory-Friendly Mornings for kids with autism and anyone who benefits from a calmer experience. See the guided itinerary at BigTex.com/Sensory.

Where Kids Should Start: Little Lone Stars Land and the Kidway

The 2026 fair has two dedicated areas for young fairgoers, designed for different ages.

Area Best For What’s There
Little Lone Stars Land (new) Toddlers and young school-age kids Near the Gurley Gate and Craft Pavilion. Kiddie rides and fun houses at 4 coupons (3 on Tuesdays), the Oak Farms Dairy Petting Zoo, The Coop fenced play area for toddlers and preschoolers, the Mighty Mike strongman show, games, and value-priced food
Kidway Kids ready for more Midway fun In the center of the Midway, with an expanded 2026 layout. Rides suited to kids 2 and older, mostly 5 coupons (3 on Tuesdays), plus the Dr Pepper Kidway Stage

State Fair of Texas Ride Height Requirements

There’s no single height rule for the whole fair. Each ride sets its own minimum height, and requirements are posted at the ride entrance and enforced there. The Kidway is designed for children 2 and older, and Little Lone Stars Land is built for toddlers and young kids.

Measure your kids before you go. Knowing your child’s exact height (and weight) saves the heartbreak of waiting in line for a ride they can’t get on. If you have a borderline kid, start in Little Lone Stars Land or the Kidway, where most rides are built for young riders.

Rides — What Parents Need to Know

Rides are not included in admission. Everything is paid with Food & Midway Coupons — $1 each, bought online or at booths inside the fair. There’s no unlimited ride wristband at the State Fair of Texas, so every ride is paid individually.

Set each kid’s ride budget up front. Hand older kids their own coupons for the day — when they’re gone, they’re gone. Leftover coupons never expire, so anything unspent works at next year’s fair.

Food with Kids

Fletcher’s Corny Dogs are universally kid-approved and the most iconic State Fair food — 8 coupons in 2026. Cotton candy is 6 coupons. Little Lone Stars Land also has value-priced kid food and refillable Little Lone Stars drinkware.

Eat something real before you arrive. A full day on nothing but fried food leads to sugar crashes by afternoon. A real meal beforehand lets you treat fair food as the experience it is.

Keep everyone hydrated. Bottled water is 1–2 coupons at value locations. Late September and early October can still run hot, so drink more water than you think you need.

Food allergies: The fair is a fried-food environment with shared fryers. Families managing allergies should ask each vendor directly before ordering.

The Best Parts of the Fair for Kids

  • Big Tex — the 55-foot talking cowboy who greets fairgoers all day, sporting a new outfit for 2026. Make him your first stop.
  • The petting zoo and livestock barns — animals up close, and one of the most underrated parts of the fair for families. Wash or sanitize hands after touching animals.
  • The Texas Star Ferris wheel — the largest Ferris wheel in Texas at 212 feet, with views of the fair and downtown Dallas.
  • Little Lone Stars Land and the Kidway — rides and play space built for young kids.
  • The auto show and exhibit buildings — indoor breaks from the Midway’s noise and heat.

Practical Family Logistics

Strollers and wagons: Allowed on the fairgrounds, and also available to rent through HomeTown Mobility at the Front Gate (Parry Ave.) and Grand Ave. A double stroller is $25 per day — see bigtex.com for other rental prices.

Family restrooms: Outside the Food and Fiber building (GO TEXAN Pavilion), inside the Briscoe Carpenter Livestock Center, the Embarcadero Building, the Hall of State, and the Natural History Museum.

If you get separated: Report a missing child immediately to the nearest police officer, safety team member, or information booth. Agree on a meeting spot before you go in, and tuck a note with your phone number into young kids’ pockets.

Sunscreen: Apply before you arrive and reapply midday. Kids burn fast in the early weeks of the fair.

Getting there: The DART Green Line stops at Fair Park Station at the main gate and is often easier than driving with young children. Official parking is $25 per car. See our State Fair parking guide for full options.
